We all need
Iodine to maintain a healthy Thyroid which is a small butterfly shaped gland
situated below our Adam’s Apple. Its
hormones are important for bone and brain development as well as to assist in
our metabolism. Iodine deficiency is the
most common cause of an underproduction of Thyroid Hormones which may result in
tiredness, feeling cold, dry skin, hair loss and compromised cognitive
development in children. A swollen thyroid gland may also be a result of iodine
deficiency, also called a goiter.
How can I reduce my risk of having a low Iodine level?
Eat Iodine rich foods such as Carrots, mushrooms, onions, radishes and iodized salt as well as seafood. Drink filtered water to minimize chlorine and fluoride intake as these block the absorption of Iodine into our bodies as does the additives that are put into flour.
If you are planning to fall pregnant, please ensure you check your Iodine levels as iodine deficiency in pregnancy can lead to miscarriages, stillbirth, autism and slow brain function in the child.
How to check your Iodine Levels:
1. Come in to see our clinic sister for a blood level check
2. Come in and ask our clinic sister to do the “iodine patch check” where Lugols Iodine is painted on an area of your skin the size of a palm of a hand. If the stain patch is gone in 24 hours then this indicates you are deficient in Iodine and need supplementation
DO NOT SELF MEDICATE WITH LUGOLS IODINE – come in for advice and instructions on how to optimize your health with Iodine patching or oral iodine as per your individual needs
Our clinic and pharmacist team is at your service to educate, medicate and encourage you and your family, and in doing, to ensure you prevent illness and keep healthy and happy!
