Who knew there were so many different forms of Magnesium, with a spectrum of benefits – I will shed some light on this topic to make it easier for you to know which Magnesium is right for you !
Magnesium plays many roles in the body, which include supporting muscle and nerve function, maintaining healthy bones, and promoting cardiovascular health, making it popular with sports men and women, the young and the elderly.
Low magnesium levels may present with muscle spasms, eyelid twitching, and fatigue.
Magnesium provides energy by enabling the body to produce, store, and utilize adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of cells. It assists certain enzymes that convert food (glucose) into fuel. It also helps regulate blood sugar and improves muscle/nerve function, reducing fatigue.
Numerous medications can cause low magnesium for example PPI’s which are commonly prescribed acid blockers for gastritis and reflux. Diuretics, certain heart medicines (digoxin) and corticosteroids (prednisone) can all cause magnesium depletion.
The organic salt forms are the best absorbed and include citrate, bisglycinate and L-threonate
Magnesium Oxide and Chloride are the most common form of magnesium due to its easy access and affordability. However it is a less soluble form, with decreased rates of absorption and increased potential for side effects eg diarrhea,., nausea, and abdominal cramping.
Magnesium Citrate is one of the most bioavailable forms of magnesium and is readily absorbed in the gut. Magnesium citrate also has a laxative effect as it increases fluid in the bowels, It is slightly more expensive than Magnesium Oxide or chloride
Magnesium glycinate is a chelated form of magnesium and the most popular form of magnesium due to it’s superior bio availability and fewer effects. The glycinate form works really well for muscle spasms and cramps.
It will give you energy in the morning, but also help to relax muscles and calm the nerves at night for a good night’s sleep. This formulation is also slightly more expensive.
Magnesium L-threonate is a relatively new magnesium supplement on the market and has high bioavailability. It is also more expensive than the other Magnesium forms. This salt form is unique compared to the others as it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.
Threonate enhances cognitive function, improve memory and learning, reduce anxiety and stress by calming neurotransmitters like GABA, and support better sleep quality, especially deeper stages, making it a powerful brain-focused supplement. It also supports overall mental well-being and may help with symptoms of ADHD.
